How to Stain Concrete Patio

There are different ways to stain your concrete ratio. However, I will share the easiest steps that anyone can do. There are five steps to stain your outdoor patio.

It is the most important step to stain your concrete patio. You should clean your surface by sweeping it. This will remove all the dust from the Patio.

After sweeping with the help of a pressure washer, wash the entire concrete for deep cleaning. Don’t worry if you don’t have a pressure washer as you can buy it or rent it from a nearby store.

One important thing that you should take care of while doing cleaning is to avoid all muriatic acid cleaners.

This type of acid removes important minerals that are needed to create the desired colorful effect for your concrete.


Repairing can be done in the cracks or fixing the edges. To repair your crack You can use a concrete crack filler and after that use a floor scrubber to smooth out the sealer.

For the edges that are chipped, you can use a makeshift edge or vinyl patching compound to fill in the missing edge, especially in the corners.

If you are using a crack sealer you must wait for 24 hours to make it completely dry before you paint.

Surface Preparation

In this step, you have to pick the right stain for your concrete. Basically, there are two types of stains available in the market as is stains and water-based stains. You can also go with the concrete paint

If you are going for an acid stain you should use a concrete etch and cleaner to get the surface ready.

Make sure that you use PPE and put drop cloths to avoid staining anything that you want to paint. The edges of the floor are any element like doors and wooden furniture.


Make your concrete all wet with clean water but do not oversaturate it. 

You can use the acid-resistant airless paint sprays to apply the stain on your concrete. Always try to make sure that you do not paddle on the floor.

Lastly, use your paint roller and a paintbrush to stain the smaller areas and corners that are missed by the sprayer.

Cross-check all the areas of your surface that the paint is evenly applied. Now all you have to do is wait patiently.

Sealing Your Stain

After waiting for a day, you can now use a concrete sealer to protect the final look of the stain.
